Spring Cleaning is here… Get ready for Renton’s Spring Recycle Day, May 9, 2009!

The latest utility mailing brings us news of Renton’s Spring Recycle Day set for May 9, 2009. With drop off at the North parking lot of Renton Technical College from 9am to 3pm, this should be a busy day in town for anyone clearing out shrubs/trees from their yards, and for getting rid of some of the larger items in a household that traditional waste management doesn’t pick up regularly.

You can find more details at www.rentonwa.gov

Keep in mind that hazardous waste is not accepted and that you can find information on how to dispose of these types of items at www.govlink.org/hazwaste/house/disposal/ and for info on recycling computers and TV’s go to www.ecyclewashington.org

Is it possible to be too fruity? Local program helps share the fruit tree wealth in Seattle.

Today we have a guest post from Julie Kadingo, a member on the Georgetown Yahoo Groups site.  This program is pretty darn cool and a great idea for sharing the wealth of all the fruit trees in Seattle that go underutilized each year.  It was fantastic that this program reminder came out as I’ve been considering putting together a fruit tree and garden goodies exchange in my own residential area so that lots of neighbors can benefit from a wider variety of plantings and any excess can make it to local food banks instead of in the compost pile or rotting in the garden plot.

Hi Everyone,Last year, I worked with Solid Ground’s Community Fruit Harvest. Many homes in the Greater Seattle area have apple, plum, or pear trees that can produce hundreds of pound of fruit. Owners may turn a pound or two in pies or jars of applesauce; however, since a tree drops its entire yield in a matter of days/weeks, most fruit turns to waste, either as “car bombs” or “lawn carpets.”

In 2008 volunteers from the Fruit Harvest Program collected 18,000+ pounds from seven neighborhoods. The fruit was donated to food banks, meals programs, shelters, residential facilities, programs for children and youth, and senior programs.

If you are interested in helping this year:

**as a tree owner who’d like your tree to be on this years map for donating all or some of the fruit.

**as a tree owner who’d like to attend workshops on caring for trees (pruning, planting, managing pests.

**anyone who’d like to learn how to can, make jam, dry fruit, participate in community kitchens where everyone brings what they have and makes meals that can be frozen for your family or donated.

**anyone who’d like to volunteer to pick fruit in the Georgetown area, store fruit, donate a ladder for other volunteers who are picking fruit…

**anyone who is curious

Are you chicken?

A local organization called Seattle Tilth is having a workshop this coming weekend in Issaquah to teach the public how to raise and keep chickens, they call it “City Chickens“.  I love the idea of it because then you can have fresh eggs, composting material for your gardens, and chickens naturally want to eat all manner of bugs and slugs.  Thankfully, the majority of bugs they eat (and slugs) are non-beneficial to a garden so it’s a great way to organically treat a yard for pests.  For years I have grown organic vegetables so when I saw that most municipalities will allow up to 3 chickens, even in the city, I thought this could be a great way to expand that practice.  Plus, Michael eats eggs all the time for breakfast.  I loved the idea of having more local food sources for us and our neighbors to share.

I’m thinking about going to the workshop because I have a desire to keep chickens but I’m not sure I can convince my partner, Michael, that it will be a reasonable thing to do.  The first time I brought it up we had 4 pets, and now we have 7, no thanks to a guy we helped out by fostering his cat whom he gave to us pregnant without telling us. So, now we have 3 dogs and 4 cats.  The cats are all indoor animals so they won’t attack chickens but our neighbors do have roaming outside cats so I’d be more leery of them and would need to make sure a coop was well closed up at night and also set up to keep other critters at bay during the daytime.

Be sure before buying any chickens for yourself that you check with your local city ordinances about whether chickens are allowed, and how many, in your area. Plus, for those of you who live in HOA developments, you’ll want to make sure there aren’t restrictions in your covenants.

Check out Seattle Tilth’s website for many other gardening classes!

The Etsy bitsy spider went up the water spout…

Ok, so that’s not really how the child’s story/song goes.  Actually Etsy.com is a website where you can find all manner of things handmade. Want an original piece of furniture or jewelry?  This is the place to be.  I found out about this site via my Biznik networking in the Greenies Mastermind Meetup gatherings.  Several of the people involved in this group are folks who make custom items so it’s a great place for them to showcase their wares and not have to build their own site right away.  I saw some pretty cool jewelry items and they have all manner of interesting bits for putting together your own stylish wedding accessories.

Phinney Neighborhood’s annual home show is coming up and volunteers are needed

The PNA puts on this Design & Remodel Fair each year.  There will be many vendors available to help you in your designing and remodeling projects including “green” options and traditional methods.  People from all over the local area typically come from Queen Anne to Greenwood/Aurora, Fremont, Ballard, and more.

I’ve listed a few jobs and shifts, although there may be other needs not listed here. Take a look at your calendar and let me know if you’d like to assist with this event. For scheduling purposes, it would be nice to know your first, second, and third choice of job/shift. Virtually all of these jobs call for 2 volunteers per shift, so please let me know if you’d like to work with a friend or family member.

Sustainable communities of note: South Lake Union

I’m a big fan of Vulcan and I don’t mean Spock and his kind.  No, I mean Paul Allen’s real estate development company which has transformed the South Lake Union area after the bid for a large public park failed with the voting public of Seattle (I voted yes).  Paul Allen had bought up most of the land in the SLU area to donate to that park project and when it failed the back up plan that the city had already approved was for his company to be able to redevelop the mostly run down part of Seattle.  Of course, with any new development comes controversy so many people protested it happening and there are still many divided on how it’s turning out.

What I think is a beautiful way of giving back to the community turned even more beautiful in my eyes when Vulcan decided that the majority of what it would develop would be as environmentally sensitive as possible. Green and LEED were words and terms that were beginning to be thrown around in the commercial real estate sector but not everyone accepted it with open arms because it often is more expensive to develop this way. But Vulcan chose the path least traveled and helped start a revolution in our own green back yard.  Plus, they promote all kinds of sustainable community practices.  I love also the idea of bringing corporate businesses, retail and living spaces into one community because it promotes urban density in a similar way to larger cities around the world. It also got a trolley brought back into the history of our city and it may soon connect with the currently non-working waterfront trolley and a connection to the Central District that I’ve written about recently.

One of the projects that is an example of a Green Building is the Alycone Apartments.  It’s nice to see an apartment building that has the health of the people residing there as a priority.

If you want to learn more about what Vulcan and the community around SLU are doing, sign up online for their monthly newsletters.  There are lots of cool activities, stores, and places to live in this renovated community.

Going “Green” in 2008 part 3 – at the Northwest Flower & Garden Show?

Whodathunkit?  They actually have to talk “green” at a show that is all about outdoor spaces.  Alright, I’m being a little facetious since we all know you can grow a garden with loads of chemicals and genetically altered plants.  Since I’ve always gardened organically (the past 15 years or more at 5-6 different home sites) of course I am pleased to see that we’re coming back into a time where individuals believe that we can take a role in better caring for our planet and the resources used in it, as well as what we derive from it.

Just this morning I was marveling at the bounty that my partner and I were able to enjoy this morning as we went for our morning walk with our 3 dogs.  On the trails around our house we picked blackberries – we’ve been enjoying these for a couple of weeks now – and today’s haul was around a pound worth.  From our own home we picked pears and apples from the 3 fruit trees we own.  This morning’s breakfast consisted of a tasty yogurt, fruit and nut mix I made for us out of these items and we’ll be sharing our items with neighbors too.

Speaking of neighbors, we have a lovely elderly woman next to us who is growing tomatoes and hot peppers.  It’s funny because she grows tomatoes every year, but she doesn’t eat them.  She tells me that she likes to just have something growing and these are easy for her to do. One caveat she has for using them though is her “cha cha” that she makes which utilizes green tomatoes in the mix of goodies in this hot, tasty treat for the mouth. Think kimchi and you’ll get an idea of what it is.

Anyway, back to the NWFG show….

Here is an excerpt from the press release sent out today:

SUSTAINABLE GARDENING TAKES CENTER STAGE ATNORTH AMERICA’S THIRD LARGEST FLOWER & GARDEN SHOW  Organizers of Northwest Flower & Garden Show Reveal Theme for 2009 Event

SEATTLE – Salmon Bay Events, organizers of North America’s third largest flower and garden show, today announced initial details on the 2009 Northwest Flower & Garden Show including the show’s theme – “Sustainable Spaces. Beautiful Places.” “Next year’s show will place a major focus on gardening materials and techniques that are good for the environment,” said Duane Kelly, chairman and founder of the annual event, now in its twenty-first year. “Show goers can expect to come away with a number of great ideas that conserve resources such as water and soil while, at the same time, making their gardens more self-sustaining and easier to care for.”

During the past year, organic gardening and vegetable gardening have grown in popularity thanks to the public’s keen interest in doing what’s best for the environment.  The movement has also gained traction with consumers seeking homegrown fruits and vegetables that not only taste better but reduce ever increasing grocery bills.  The annual event, which will span a total of six acres, showcases 25 full-scale gardens and offers over 120 free seminars for both veteran and aspiring gardeners looking for ideas and information on how to reinvigorate any outdoor living space. This year, full-scale gardens will focus on a greener future, featuring the elements of a sustainable lifestyle including native plants, organic vegetable gardens, creative recycling and composting.

WHAT:              2009 Northwest Flower & Garden Show                        www.gardenshow.com WHEN:             February 18 – 22, 2009

                        Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, 9 a.m. – 8 p.m.                        Sunday, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. WHERE:           Washington State Convention and Trade Center7th & Pike                        Seattle, Washington

Because of my blogging, I guess I’m now also considered part of the press covering their events (I’ve written about NWFGS for a couple of years at least in various online venues) and I may actually contact them to ask some questions. Do any of you out in the public have any you’d like me to get answered for you?  I’m personally interested in hearing how they might be highlighting not just soil, plant, and watering techniques but also products that can be used to retrofit houses that want to recapture roof water, preventing run offgrey-water retrofits, creating a bug free or beneficial bug friendly retention pond on site to filter run off, pervious surface options, and more.

There are some new construction developers that utilize a lot of these methods, such as Martha Rose Construction, and sometimes you’ll see these kinds of custom projects in magazines like Dwell, but I’d like to see how a current homeowner can reduce, reuse and recycle too.

Not everyone knows that I’m a big gardening fan but there are times when I’m walking around a client’s home that I can tell they’re surprised by the number of plants that I can identify by sight as we walk around and I’m giving them my staging advice for the exterior of their home.  Yes, staging includes that all important “curb appeal” which will often mean taking a hard look at the aesthetic of the exterior of a home and the surrounding gardens (or lack thereof).

At my last home, the one I just finished closing on the sale of last week, I had done extensive exterior work using a contractor to build a wrap around deck, patio, raised beds, etc.  Not only was this nice for my own personal use, but it was great in the eventual resale of the home because of all the extras that it provided.  In the bedding areas I put in mostly perennials but some of the spaces were also used for organic gardening for our own vegetable food supplies in the spring through fall.  Most of the plant choices were made to be low maintenance as well as drought-tolerant and we had rain barrels installed to catch water runoff from the deck for use in the garden to limit seasonal summer water use.  With food prices and gas prices being what they are today, it is nice to have an onsite garden which helps limit the number of trips to the store for fresh produce and keep our household expenses down.

To keep up on various gardening ideas I frequently read the NWLife section of the Seattle Times, specifically, the gardening section. In the July 2nd edition there was an article on the “native plant of the month” named Sisyrinchium, aka Blue-eyed grass.  I’m looking for ideas for my new home where we have an area that ends up with an occasional water run-off area caused by the topography of the lot and neighborhood.  My thoughts in attempting to limit actual run-off and to help in slowing down the water and helping it to percolate more slowly into the ground is to put in a mini-marsh like garden where water can collect and there will be plants that help the process and that can survive and thrive in that environment.

The blue-eyed grass seems to be one of many that can fit into my little scheme.  Granted, I realize I’m taking on a multi-year process of putting this in place and my first goal is to stake out the spot in our new lot that will become our new vegetable garden, but collecting ideas is part of the fun of gardening.

The best tidbit of info that I gleaned from this article though was the website put together by the Washington Native Plant Society where you can find more information on native plants, including the places where you can buy them.  Growing native plants is a smart move because you’ll have fewer high-maintenance plants to deal with because native plants typically have already figured out how to defend themselves against pests and they usually require less watering than more fussy plants that have been transplanted to our environment.

So, over this holiday weekend, if you’re out gardening – have fun, be safe and “go native!”
